Tackling Freakonomics

Langston Walker is 6-foot-8 and 345 pounds. He majored in economics at Cal. He plays football now for the Oakland Raiders.

He said this in a recent Sacramento Bee article:

“I bring a book for the plane ride,” Walker said. “Something that’s educational, something that will expand my mind.”

Such talk causes running back Justin Fargas to ask Walker, “Are you serious?”

Walker is very serious about reading. The last book he finished before leaving for Baltimore was “Freakonomics,” an alternative look at economics by Steven D. Levitt and Stephen J. Dubner.

Economics for the masses, a noble goal for all who have hope for the future. Perhaps there is hope afterall.

Why wouldn't he be serious? A Berkeley econ major reading a book on economics?

Then again, seeing as how Fargas' background is pretty much being the son of the guy who played Huggy Bear in Starsky & Hutch, I shouldn't be surprised.

Considering how awful the Raiders have been, shouldn't they be focusing on reading their playbooks?

I always thought it's odd when you hear people talk about football or basketball at "Cal" versus students or professors at "Berkeley." Most people I've met do not know that...

It's the same school! One name is associated with the sports teams while the other is associated with one of the top public universities in the u.s.

Why is it that "Cal" doesn't match up to other top academic powerhouses the way "Berkeley" does?
