When a gang member runs for alderman

With city elections fast approaching in Chicago, I went looking to find out more about the time that the Gangster Disciples, the biggest gang in Chicago, ran a candidate for alderman. I had always heard about it, but never knew any details. Legend has it that the Chicago police had decided to tolerate the Gangster Disciples, but because they got active in politics, the police lowered the hammer and decimated the gang by arresting almost all the leaders in a huge sweep.

I didn’t expect to find anything half as interesting, informative, well written, (and long) as this outstanding piece written by Greg Donaldson. I assume he is the same Greg Donaldson who wrote these pieces for New York Magazine, many of which look extremely interesting as well.

Hey Steven, you left out a link. You have "as this outstanding piece" and no link for that piece.

Gangs and politcs is redundant.
The same hate, the same divison, the same vision.
If you dont agree you need to take deeper look at the difference between a politican and a statesman.
Look at the gangs the roam the halls of Congress.
They dont live by the same rules as the rest of the people, do they?
Neither do the Gangsters.
Congress takes money and uses the IRS as its henchmen should you happen to be on their bad side.
Sure an occasional member will get "sent away" not unlike a Gang member.
I'm am not just trying to make some angry, emotional comparison.
I mean intellectually look at Congress and look at the Gangsters.

The average citizen has been buying into this b.s. for years. All these so-called gang experts with half-baked tales. 20th Century VOTE was no front and was not a sham. There was never any indictments brought against the organization. The Donaldson story depicts Gator establishing a relationship with the MCs which is far from being true. He had a relationship with a couple of guys. It did not give him a pass with the organization. In fact, he was not even respected in the organization he came from.
Lastly, Larry Hoover was an organizer for peace in the prison. He was never in control of the streets. The person who had the city (the lingo)for the GDs changed almost every three to six months. It is ludicrous to think that someone behind bars is controlling what people walking the streets will or won't do. Larry prepared men leaving prison to go to the streets and create legitimate businesses and to create a political base. Most men chose to go in a different direction. Hoover never saw the millions the media and feds claimed. People bought him clothes and sent him money, but there were no millions. Yes people in the streets made millions collectively, but that was their own short-lived wealth most ended up in prison or broke because of their drug habits.
