Mark Cuban Isn’t the Only Clear-Thinking NBA Owner in Texas

An article in the current Sports Illustrated about the underappreciated San Antonio Spurs, by Jack McCallum, includes a brief profile of the Spurs’ principal owner, Peter Holt. A son of privilege, he was a drinker and a hell-raiser who joined the Army to straighten himself out and was sent to Vietnam in 1967. He tells McCallum about walking through the jungle, hacking away with a machete, when he came upon a hidden grenade — “but the trip wire,” Holt says, “went the opposite way from where I swung my machete. Had it gone the other way, it would’ve blown my brains out.”

He has obviously never forgotten this incident; better yet, he took from it a couple of very good lessons: “I came out of Vietnam with two things: a grasp of how the collective good keeps people alive, and the fact that luck can play a big part in everything you do.”

As a long time Spurs fan and a resident of San Antonio, I can say that the Spurs organization is full of top notch people. I've never been a big fan of Holt specifically, but I think that he does a good job of surrounding himself with great people and it truly shows.

Yes, but the Spurs are the most boring thing in Texas. Maybe he needs those hell-raising ways that he lost in Vietnam? Maybe that's the problem. HE'S boring.

My understanding is that Holt got into serious trouble and had a choice to be sent to either prision or Vietnam. He chose NAM. Also the only reason the Spurs are the most boring is because they got rid of this guy

Ok pete12, I was a little harsh on him.

But I am just amused at this thought that somehow the world is better because Baby Boomers who were hell raisers until they had children when suddenly they find god and become boring judgmental little weasels is somehow great for this country.

In fact, it may just have been really really bad for this country. Just look at George Bush. Scooter Libby. Franklin Graham. Almost all the neocons. Bill Bennett (who sowed wild oats with Janis Joplin!).

I mean...come on...the Spurs are so boringly nice that no one cares. It's killing the NBA.

I thought Bill Bennett was still raisin hell at the bellagio
