The FREAKest Links: Be All That You Can Be Edition

Here’s a creative solution to the stall in Army recruitment: the military and senior defense officials are trying to get a bill through Congress that would allow recruitment of illegal aliens. The main attraction for the recruits, besides the steady job itself, would be the prize of citizenship.

Picking up where Second Life leaves off, IBM has developed Innov8, a virtual office program that can be used by schools and businesses to train employees anywhere in the world.

A fitting follow up to Steve Landsburg‘s discussion of charity yesterday, via the Chicago Tribune: a study by University of Oregon economics professor William Harbaugh and psychology professor Ulrich Mayr found that giving to charity can directly stimulate pleasure sensors in the brain.

"recruitment of illegal aliens"

so they are just trying to make this legal? unofficially this practice has been going on for decades.

Starship Troopers anyone? (the book, not the ridiculous movie, of course)

It's not a good idea to outsource who fights your wars. If they can't be justified to the extent that your own people are willing to fight, they're probably not worth fighting.

And wouldn't illegal aliens be better off working as mercenaries through KBR or other contractors where they'd make a LOT more money?

the study also showed that miserliness directly stimulates Broca's area to locute "bah humbug"

Heinlein? Ugh. Idiot... never liked his works

Requis

How costly will it be to perform background checks on illegal aliens? This almost sounds like a legalized form of human trafficking.

I think it's great. Is this part of Bush's new immigration plan? We catch all the illegals, give them some training and weapons and deport them,

TO IRAQ!

Technically if they are illegal then they are not Americans. So America won't be in Iraq.

This is absolutely amazingly brilliant!

It feels good to be nice. Imagine that. I wonder if there could be an evolutionary explanation for that? I guess we'll have to give Bill and Ulrich millions of dollars to find out!

The problem with this idea from a political standpoint is that it creates an incentive for a large and influential political power (The Armed Forces) to combat other means of legalization. Undocumented alients will only join the military under this system if other paths to citizenship are closed (at least at wartime). If the goal is easier paths to citizenship, in the long run, this program is detrimental.

The privacy advocate will be all over Innov8. They won't like the thought of every key stroke being recorded. And the biometric log-in will vex them.

The French go there first. They call it the Foreign Legion. Le plus: superb, expendable, gung-ho assault troops; le moins: you can't let them out between wars. Since the USA has no problem in recruiting soldiers of this type, and a shortage of the more nuanced kind you can use in a grey-area peacekeeping mission, it doesn't look very attractive. Gurkhas, normal Nepali villagers who soldier for the money, are a better military bet - but they have no interest in immigrating to the US.
