Our Daily Bleg: Holy Comic Quotations, Batman!

Our resident quote bleggar Fred Shapiro, editor of The Yale Book of Quotations, is back with another request. If you have a bleg of your own — it needn’t have anything to do with quotations — send it along here.

I would welcome suggestions of what are the most famous quotations of all time from comic books or graphic novels. These could be not only one-time quotations, but also recurring catchphrases.

Nelson

"With great power, there alsmo must come -- great responsibility." - Ben Parker (Spider-Man)

Jack Peacock

Peanuts from "Snoopy":

"Life is full of rude awakenings."

John

Up, up and away! - Superman

Dan Callahan

Kimota94

Wow, beaten to the punch by a bunch of people who've probably read way fewer comics than I have! I'm duly humbled!! :-)

Possible additions:

"I did it 35 minutes ago." - Oxymandias, from "Watchmen"

"'Nuff Said!" - Marvel bullpen tagline

"I didn't put you in a prison, Evey... I just showed you the bars" - V, from "V For Vendetta"

"The madder Hulk gets, the stronger he gets!" - Hulk tagline

Jesse

"I've got a bad feeling about this" - Any self-respecting Star Wars graphic novel.

Mace

I agree with number 8 - "Jiminy jillickers Radioactive Man!"

maiqk

Marci Kiser

"More than anyone in the world, when you scratch away everything else away from Batman, you're left with someone who doesn't who doesn't want to see anybody die." - Superman to Batman.

Joe

It's kind of amazing there aren't any really memorable quotes from The Dark Knight Returns. It definitely rates as one of the best comics out there, but it was short on quotable dialogue.

V

"...now it's my turn." --Wolverine in the sewer under the Hellfire club

Rob (comic geek)

(when asked to surrender)

Captain America: "DO YOU THINK THIS A ON MY HEAD STANDS FOR FRANCE!?"

moleboy

Captain America to The Red Skull:
"Only one of us is going to leave this room alive...
*big splash page*
And it's not going to be me!"

Steven Peters

POW!

Full screen from the old Batman TV show. Not sure if it counts.

I particularly liked "You don't get it, boy. This isn't a mudhole... It's an operating table. And I'm the surgeon."

But I think the one that sums up Batman in his twilight years is this: "This would be a good death... But not good enough."

Lucas

"Riddle me this" - The Riddler (Batman villian)
"I'm just your friendly neighborhood Spider Man" - Spiderman

Michael

I have often thought of microeconomics when reading Dark Knight Returns in which Batman claims:

"We kill, too often, because we've made it easy, too easy, sparing ourselves the mess, and the work."
