Huge in Canada

Well, we took our lumps in the U.K., losing out to “The World Is Flat” in the inaugural Financial Times/Goldman Sachs Business Book of the Year Award. But here’s some consolation: it turns out we’re huge in Canada. Having grown up in upstate New York, I’ve got an “accent” that’s often mistaken for Canadian, and friends over the years have offered to bestow honorary Canadian status upon me. Maybe I’ll take them up on it now.

I can see why you lost to the Flat World. It is a far weightier tome. I think that it is obvious that when one book weighs to much more than another, it is that much more important. (or maybe you should do a study on this phenomenum).

That said, I probably got about the same amount of really good information from either one, and yours was a lot shorter and a lot more fun to read.

Sorry, need to proof better. I should have said:

I heard the book is causing some roar in Brazil too. It's the ninth in the ranking of "self-help/business titles" according to Folha de Sao Paulo, one of the top newspapers in the nation.

the book has HUGE following in brasil.. in orkut there are discussion groups in portuguese about the book.. the items of most interest seem to be the crime studies, and the ones of names.. names in brasil seem to follow "pop culture" aside from presidents: jackson, kennedy, washington, jefferson, lincoln, there are variations of lady diana, lady d in latin countries as she was known, we have leididee, michael jackson has become mikaljackso, one word, michael jordan has spawned the name jordan and mikaljorda, there is beckham for david beckham and of course, the brasilian stars, ronaldos, ayrton, etc..

Which part of upstate New York did you grow up in?

We have a bit of the Canadian influence here in Rochester too, eh.

Bruce

What econopete said. Are you from true upstate, or just somewhere north of 178th Street? I grew up right on the border, but my accent has never been mistaken for Canadian -- but I have noticed my inflections (but not pronunciation) are somewhat different when I am surrounded by Canadians.

I grew up outside of Albany/Schenectady, in a very small town called Duanesburg, which was settled by and named for James Duane, the first post-Constitution mayor of New York City. Duane Street in TriBeCa is also named for James Duane; the Duane Reade drugstore chain in NYC is so named because its first location (or so the lore tells it) was on Broadway between Duane and Reade Streets. And so, though my upbringing was very humble, I do have longstanding ties to both the mayoralty of NYC as well as its largest drug store.

I'm originally from Ballston Spa, not too far from Duanesburg. Ballston Spa is the birthplace of civil war general and populizer of Baseball Abner Doubleday. It was also once famous for it's natural springs. After being back for Thanksgiving I can safely say you are 'Huge' there as well, at least among the 3 other people at the dinner table.
