Our Daily Bleg: 21st Century Movie Lines Only

Our resident quote bleggar Fred Shapiro, editor of the Yale Book of Quotations, is back with another request. If you have a bleg of your own, send it along here.

Thanks to all for the hundreds of responses to the movie lines bleg. I was looking for 21st-century quotes, but there was some confusion on the issue.

My sense is that the following are the big lines of the millennium so far (not in any particular order):

“I drink your mikshake!” There Will Be Blood

“I’ve had it with these motherf*****g snakes on this motherf*****g plane!” Snakes on a Plane

“I wish I knew how to quit you.” Brokeback Mountain

“This is Sparta!” 300

“Ready your breakfast and eat hearty. For tonight we dine in hell!” 300

“Call it.” No Country for Old Men

“So this is how liberty dies, with thunderous applause.” Revenge of the Sith

I exclude Lord of the Rings lines, as these are really from the book. (Were the Brokeback, No Country for Old Men, and 300 lines also present in the source material?)

This week I ask for more suggestions of memorable 21st-century film lines, in case the distraction of century confusion suppressed some of the contributions last week. That’s 2000-2008 or 2001-2008, depending on your definitional preference.

-'Don't touch that squirrels nuts!'
Charlie and the Chocolate factory

". . . the [pirate's] code is more what you'd call "guidelines" than actual rules." Pirates of the Caribbean (2003). This is the only one of the suggested lines that I can actually imagine quoting. It hasn't been an impressive decade, so far.

"It's just a game, Focker!" - Meet the Parents

after my friend and I saw "no country for old men", we could not stop quoting the following moment.

When Anton Chigur (or however you spell it) is in the shop, and the old man says he'd better close up shop, Chigur asks,

"what time do you close?"

and the scared confused man says,

"now... we close now"

Chigur replies,

"Now is not a time. What time do you close?"

now anytime people say the word "now" you can just respond with, in creepy Anton Chigur voice, "Now is not a time."

G. Owen Schaefer

"We should totally just STAB CAESAR!"

-Mean Girls

Second "Call it, frendo," from No Country, "I look at you and I'm home," from Finding Nemo, and "Who are you? / I'm the guy doing his job. You must be the other guy," from The Departed.

Randy MacDonald

Some _Superman Returns_ lines:

. I've _done_ Superman -- Lois Lane

. Great Caesar's Ghost! -- Perry White

Fred Shapiro

Re #109: I hate to bring this up, but "The Matrix" is a 20th-century movie, and "desert of the real" is a phrase from Baudrillard.

I agree with someone way up there...
"I am not drinking any f-ing Merlot!" --Sideways

"He's the cheese to my macaroni." --Juno

"One of us had to die. With me, it tends to be the other guy." -- The Departed

Economist Grunt

"We can stay up late, swapping manly stories, and in the morning, I'm making waffles!"

Donkey - Shrek
(Hard to find one that's not already part of a fairy tale).

"My name is Buck, and I like to ****."

Kill Bill

Overall bad period for movie quotes. Even these two are reaching.

"I drink your milkshake. I drink it up!"
-There Will Be Blood

You must have this one as Daniel Day-Lewis' character deteriorates and his acting won him the Oscar.

Hang the code, and hang the rules. They're more like guidelines anyway. Pirates of the Carribean

(When Bob Dylan (Cate Blanchett) is looking up at a statue of Jesus on the cross.

-How does it feel?
-Can yo do some of your earlier stuff? (not an exact quote)

Excellent work and an excellent selection.

I'll agree with 1. "What we do in life echoes in eternity"

I always thought "Are you not entertained?" was an interesting line in Gladiator as well.

I say "I love you too, but I'm gonna mace you in the face!" everytime my boyfriend says "I love you."

I posted the last time, but I'd include a few more:

"Night is a dark time for me." - Blades of Glory

"You're my boy, Blue." - Old School

"This vexes me. I'm terribly vexed." - Gladiator

"I'm not drinking any F*cking Merlot." - Sideways

"I love lamp." - Anchorman

"No excuses. Play like a Champion!" Wedding Crashers

I love you too, but I'm gonna mace you in the face! Darjeeling Ltd

As a high school teacher, I have to second "Durka Durka, Mohammad Jihad", "Very nice!", "Gosh!", and "60% of the time, it works all the time"....these being the ones I hear most in the hallways.

I would add:

"Well, everyone knows Custer died at Little Bighorn. What this book presupposes is... maybe he didn't." --The Royal Tenenbaums

Although the Wall-E quote is pronounced "Eva," the character's name is really "Eve" (Extraterrestrial Vegetation Evaluator).

Second the nominations for "I am McLovin." - Superbad

Tracy Turnblad: "Negro Day's the best! I wish every day were Negro Day!" - Hairspray

Sheesh. How could I forget this one? This has got to be THE 21st Century Quote from THE 21st Century movie ("300" can't touch this movie)...

"Welcome to the desert of the real."

Morpheus, THE MATRIX

"That's all." The Devil Wears Prada

"E, esse, a..." The Diving Bell and the Butterfly

"Mrs. Darcy... Mrs. Darcy... Mrs. Darcy... Mrs. Darcy." Pride and Prejudice

"Go get 'em, tiger." Spider-Man 2
