Apple’s New Podcast App

Apple has just released an app called Podcasts which, yes, helps you download and manage podcast from the iTunes store.

Coverage of the app can be found herehere, here, and here.

I haven’t used the app yet so I cannot comment on it — some of the iTunes reviews indicate some fixes are needed — but I have to say that I do like Apple’s taste in the podcasts it has chosen for its promo materials:

Here is where to find Freakonomics Radio on iTunes.

Nice! Do you think you were selected based on your fruit choice in the picture?

The only problem right now seems that some podcasts still only download to your ITunes, and not into the new podcast app. I think the Freakonomics podcasts are working properly with the new app.

I just had a look at the reviews for this app on iTunes and they are overwhelmingly negative. I can’t figure out how they aggregated all those 0-1 star reviews to give themselves 2.5 stars. Since converting to Apple (iphone and ipad) a year ago I’ve been underwhelmed by their own apps, but this sounds like they’ve lowered the bar even further.

Perhaps a Freakonomics post or podcast on “Destroying brand value” would be timely?
