District 214 Book Giveaway Is Over

A couple weeks ago, a member of suburban Chicago’s high-school district 214 asked that Freakonomics, along with several other books, be removed from a list of required summer reading. In the end, none of the books were removed — and since District 214 students are free to read Freakonomics, we offered to send free signed copies to the first 50 students who asked. The good news is that we received the first 50 requests in short order; the bad news is that we’re out of the giveaway books. We’ll soon send e-mails to everyone who requested a book, and the first 50 people should get their books within a week or two. Thanks to all for your interest.

I'm just a poor teacher, but if I could, I would sponsor the 51st emailer for a copy!

I'm just a poor law student, but I believe Freakonomics is a more intelligent text than anything else these students will have the opportunity to read. Is there any way I can donate a copy or two to the students of 214? Having grown up in Arligton Heights, IL, this seems like a great opportunity to give back in a meaningful way.

I will sponsor 10 more students. Feel free to contact me.

Hi Princess Leia and MDeming,

Oddly, I received no takers for my offer of 10 free books. Did you receive any takers? Does anyone have a hypothesis for why there is zero demand for a free good that presumably has positive utility?
