Chinese Jobs Lost, and Gained
The Atlantic‘s Mitch Moxley reports that Chinese companies, faced with some P.R. problems, are hiring white expats in China to act as temporary executives. “I call these things ‘White Guy in a Tie’ events,” said one participant, who recruiting Moxley to the gig. “Basically, you put on a suit, shake some hands, and make some money. We’ll be in ‘quality control,’ but nobody’s gonna be doing any quality control.” Moxley’s Chinese language-tutor explained the rationale behind the strategy: “Having foreigners in nice suits gives the company face.” Lest you worry about Chinese job losses, know this: Chinese actors and musicians have been hired to cheer for North Korea in the World Cup.
